‘The Rugged Basque Coast of the Bay of Biscay’

Take a sailing tour to enjoy this breathtaking corner of Europe. Stop over in a small fishing village for a taste of the local delicacies or have a traditional home-made Basque meal onboard. Come along with us for a full-day or overnight, two-day trip and enjoy activities from snorkeling, fishing, swimming in the sea, wildlife watching and exploring isolated beaches.

Basque Experiences are pleased to be able to offer you these two new sailing tours this summer. Two locations, one close to Donosti/San Sebastián and the other close to Bilbao mean we can ensure you spend as much time on-board as possible. Both come with skipper – Fully qualified ‘Ocean Master’

Based in Getxo close to Bilbao our yacht, a fully equipped Bavaria 50 Cruiser embarks on a tour of the scenic coast including sights such as San Juan de Gatzelugatxe, Izaro Island, Bermeo, the port of Elantxobe and Cape Ogoño, the Bay of Plentzia, Lekeitio and Castro Urdiales. Alternatively explore the natural wonders of the Urdaibai estuary, teaming with marine and bird life. We can also take a trip up the Rio Nervion into the heart of Bilbao should the open sea be a bit too much.

Departing from Hondarribia, a short hop from Donosti/San Sebastián, on board a Beneteau First 40.7, you explore the Gipuzkoan and French Basque coastline. Visit the spectacular shell-shaped beach of San Sebastian, the ports of Pasaia, and St. Jean de Luz. Visit the fascinating flysch of Deba and Zumaia – sedimentary rock formations formed over millions of years and exposed as a result of the unrelenting ocean, and the gastronomic gem that is Getaria.

All catering on board is provided and can be prepared to your tastes. This could consist of a selection of traditional pintxos, hams, salads, chorizo, cheeses or tortilla, all accompanied by wines from La Rioja or the local white wine txakoli. You can also choose from traditional Basque dishes such as peppers stuffed with bacalao, the fisherman’s stew marmitako, or squid cooked in its own ink known as txipirones. Should you wish to dine ashore, we can take you to some of the best seafood restaurants on the coast for freshly grilled seafood or steak or other traditional dishes.

Our one sailing day excursions will take the form of a couple of hours under sail in the morning with lunch either on-board or at a restaurant in the port of call such as Plentzia, Mundaka, Castro Urdiales, Bermeo, Lekeitio, Elantxobe or Getaria. The return will also take around 2 hours

Overnight trips include two days sailing, and either catering on board, or ashore and the option of sleeping on board in the harbour or on dry land in a hotel. The following day you will be picked up and brought back to your port of call. Both yachts are fully equipped, registered for tours and insured.
